- <p> Flip through a fashion magazine these days and you'll see
- double: pairs of lovingly joined waifish look-alikes, each
- affecting the vacant gaze of someone who has consumed too much
- chamomile tea. What gives? "There's no deliberate statement,"
- says Mademoiselle editor Gabe Doppelt. "The image of sisters is
- charming." Perhaps, but others read a lofty message into the
- trend. Designer Isaac Mizrahi sees a new feminism, "a step away
- from sexy women in tight dresses, toward empowering images of
- female friendship." And the Clinton angle: "We have a President
- who hugs," says Richard Martin, fashion curator at New York
- City's Metropolitan Museum. "We're experiencing a return to
- affectionate touch." Got it.
