  18. <p>     Flip through a fashion magazine these days and you'll see
  19. double: pairs of lovingly joined waifish look-alikes, each
  20. affecting the vacant gaze of someone who has consumed too much
  21. chamomile tea. What gives? "There's no deliberate statement,"
  22. says Mademoiselle editor Gabe Doppelt. "The image of sisters is
  23. charming." Perhaps, but others read a lofty message into the
  24. trend. Designer Isaac Mizrahi sees a new feminism, "a step away
  25. from sexy women in tight dresses, toward empowering images of
  26. female friendship." And the Clinton angle: "We have a President
  27. who hugs," says Richard Martin, fashion curator at New York
  28. City's Metropolitan Museum. "We're experiencing a return to
  29. affectionate touch." Got it.
